“See Naples and then die”, or as said in Italy “Vedi Napoli e poi muori”, and surely I’m in favour of the Italian maxim. Me and my boyfriend decided to follow our great need for vacation and a very good offer that we found online. The next week, we had already flown from Thessaloniki to Naples. A trip that I will never forget.
Naples is known for its historical museums, its awe inspiring port, the nearby location to Mount Vesuvius and ancient Pompei, and of course their amazing food.
The city center belongs in the list of worldwide cultural heritage UNESCO and not in vain, as it is full of archaeological museums, cathedrals, castles and catacombs.
These monuments that I will never forget were the Cathedral of San Gennaro, the holly spirit of the city, the Castel del nuovo, the Palazzo Reale, the Piazza del Plebiscito and la Sotterranea.
Although, we had only few days in Naples, we didn’t missed the opportunity to see a ancient city like Pompei, as it was nearby. The train ticket to Pompei was really affordable, but you would need a quide tour to really feel the vibes, in this case the cost of your mini trip rises up.
Naples is the city that invented pizza Margharita, so street food is the protagonist of the city. Everywhere in Spacanapoli you can enjoy amazing pizza and pasta on the go. Now if you have a sweet tooth you must try the classics, sfogliatelle and baba with rum. I would say that coffee wasn’t a pleasant surprise, I found it bland. Their distinctive restaurants had unique wine and tasteful seafood.
The minute we arrived in the city, we found out what Italian style looks like. All the clothes were amazing quality and pretty affordable. The local market was so good that the only obstacle we had in our shopping day, was that we didn’t have enough space in our luggage. We visited the shops in Spacanapoli and the high street Toledo.
The one thing that would have never crossed my mind is, how easy was the communication with the locals, although they didn’t speak any English. They had a friendly attitude to help you, even if they didn’t know the language. The most of them use body language to communicate with the tourists and travelers.
The public means of transportation were really easy to use and at a low cost. Even taxis were almost low budget, when you found them in a cabstand. Of cource, I must say that whenever you tried to speak little Italian, a phrase or two, their hospitality and friendly spirit increased so much more. Even though, we heard all the rumors about mafia and pickpockets, we felt as safe as in any big city center.
I would totally travel back to Naples, just to visit Sorento, Pozitano and Amalfi. The place, the mood and people made me feel like home. I believe it’s the best place I have ever visited.
